3 Year Old Colts
Once again, Derby season is upon us and choosing the colt/filly that will win on the first Saturday of May becomes an abiding obsession.
Nicanor (Dynaformer, out of La Ville Rouge) grabbed his left quarter in the first few strides and didn’t show much. He won’t be on the Derby Trail, but I look forward to his future races. Unfortunately, Gulfstream doesn’t have a rebroadcast agreement with TVG, the only horse racing channel on DirecTV, so I was SOL for that.
The San Rafael Stakes, a couple of Saturdays ago, was won by ‘The Pamplemousse’, a handsome roan colt by Kafwain. It was a two-turn mile on the artificial surface of Santa Anita, run in the very respectable time of 1:36:1. The thing is: occasionally, a word or phrase gets stuck in my brain, and then (usually within a year) turns up in the news. Pamplemousse began a turette’s tic last April, and based on this, I am predicting a win in the Derby. Take that, rationalist.
